1. Overview of the Flow

We will be using the Japanese website Osakadou (https://osakadou.cool/) to import personal medicine to Japan. And then we will select the package to be deposited in Shinjuku post office. I suggest you order the pills 12-14 days before your arrival in Japan. And then when you are in Japan, go to the post office and show your package tracking number + passport, you will get your ordered prescription medicine!

1.1 Is importing medicine without prescription in Japan legal ?

Yes, I will attach the official page which explains the law in Japan: https://www.mhlw.go.jp/stf/seisakunitsuite/bunya/kenkou_iryou/iyakuhin/kojinyunyu/topics/tp010401-1.html. If you are interested, you can translate it and read it by yourself.

But in short, if you just import the medicine for personal usage and the amount is not too much, it’s legal in Japan. And you take your responsibility and don’t need a prescription for that. Tourists who enter Japan from abroad can also apply to this import of medicine for their own medical treatment during their stay in Japan.

1.2 Is the service provider Osakadou trustable ?

Yes, it’s one of the biggest and most famous personal importing agencies in Japan. I will attach several Reddit threads and you can check the discussion. Many foreigners living in Japan use their services.

1.3 Why do you recommend Osakadou ?

It’s because they accept credit card payments. There are some other similar services which also work well, but they only accept bank transfers. Of course using Osakadou, you can also do bank transfers. Then, you will probably need to use Wise or Revolut to do bank transfer which may complicate the buying process. So, I suggest Osakadou where you can pay by credit card.

Then let’s start the detailed tutorial.

2. Set up VPN to Access Osakadou Website

If your IP address is not in Japan, when you access the Osakadou website (https://osakadou.cool/), you may see a maintenance page. They restrict the ip access only to Japan, so you need VPN and change the region to Japan.

For the VPN, I recommend NordVPN. NordVPN stands out as the top choice for millions of users worldwide. You can use this referral link to try NordVPN service: https://go.nordvpn.net/aff_c?offer_id=15&aff_id=113462 , you will get a cheaper price and I will be very thankful for your support!!

3. Register Your Account in Osakadou Website

Now, you should be able to access to Osakadou website.

Please access the website by this referral link: https://osakadou.cool?tomo=4316775f7a14ef56

Please find 新規会員登録 on the home page.

Now, I will explain the important points when you create your account. But don’t need to be too worried, because you can modify some personal information after creating the account.

I will use the google-translated page in my example. When you are registering, please also use google translate for the page. This is the registration form.

  1. For the name, please give your real name in English, because you will need to show your passport in the post office in Japan to get your package. It has to be your real name.
  2. For Furigana, it means Japanese name. Please use this website https://japanesenameconverter.nolanlawson.com/ to convert your English names to a Japanese pronunciation. This name actually does not matter much, but anyway, let’s be as authentic as possible.
  3. For the sex and birth, I also suggest inputting the real data.
  4. For the address, here are some points to be aware of. Please input an address that looks real in Japanese(don’t input English address). Because we are going to send our package to Shinjuku’s post office, the address will not be checked by the post officer. So, it’s OK to input a temporary one.

I suggest you go to Google map and find some building/residence in Tokyo, and input that building’s address. I cannot just provide you with a default address here, because in the future, the Osakadou staff may notice many different people using the same address.

A way for you to find a usable address may be to input “Share House” in the Tokyo region on Google Map, and then select one of them.

You may wonder, can I input my hotel’s address when I stay in Japan ? Actually, I tried to input the hotel’s address with … APA hotel at the end, the staff contacted me by email and said the address looks weird. They asked me to modify the address. So, I think you may be able to input the hotel’s address, but please at least don’t write xxx hotel at the end.
  5. For the telephone number, please also input a telephone number that looks real. Because they will only contact you by email, it’s OK to input a made-up telephone number. In Japan, the personal mobile phone number often starts with 080, so please make a mobile number with 080-XXXX-XXXX . You input a random number to fill in the XXXX-XXXX. Maybe don’t input something like 1234-5678.
  6. There are still fields below like email and password. Please input real email, because that’s how they contact you.

Then, we complete the account registration step.

4. Decide which Medicine to Buy

Now here comes another trick in finding the medicine you want to order. By Japanese law, the website cannot show the medicine name like a promotion. As a personal import customer, you have to know the exact medicine name and directly search it.

5. Order the Medicine and Proceed to Payment

I suggest you order the pills 12-14 days before your arrival in Japan. Here, there are 2 things to note in the order process.

5.1 Select the Address to Be Shinjuku Post Office

At your recipient address, there should be an “Edit” (修正) like this, please click that, because we are going inside and change to Shinjuku Post Office .

After clicking Edit, on your profile page, You should see this field “郵便局留め” . Please select it and input the address of Shinjuku post office (Google map for Shinjuku post office https://maps.app.goo.gl/LNXrgxSQDXAvPASY9).  Please input the Japanese address, not the English one.

郵便局名: 新宿郵便局

郵便番号〒: 1638799

郵便局住所: 東京都新宿区西新宿1丁目8-8
The reason why we choose Shinjuku post office is that it’s open 7 days a week. So, you can go to take your package even on weekends. And it’s convenient to go there. After edit, the page should look like this.

There is a “上記内容に承諾します。” checkbox to check, then you can save the address information. Then, you will be back to the order page and click “Send to this Address” to go to the next step. It should be something like this before you go to the next step.

5.2 Add a note to ask them use your English name to be recipient

This one may not be necessary, but in my experiment, I got a package that is written with my Japanese name. But when I went to Shinjuku post office, I just gave them my passport, which only has my English name. It still worked, so maybe this one is not that necessary. But I would still suggest adding this note.

Now, please find field of “通信欄”. And input the following Japanese like this. It simply means please use my English name to be the recipient.

可能であれば、私のローマ字英語名を受取人にしてください。よろしくお願いします

OK. Now by going to the next confirmation page, and then there should be a payment page for you to input credit card information, you will complete the order.

And then, you will receive an email about completing the order. In the email, they should say they will get back to you after they send the package. They will also give you the tracking number, so that you will know where your package is now.

6. Go to Shinjuku Post Office to Take your Package

6.1 Track your Package

As written above, after 1 or 2 days, you should receive an email with a tracking number. After you get the tracking number, you can go to Japan post website and input your tracking number. The Japan post office tracking url is here: https://trackings.post.japanpost.jp/services/srv/search/input?locale=en

I suggest you order the pills 12-14 days before your arrival in Japan. Your package will be kept in the Shinjuku post office for 10 days. So, it is better that the package waits for you, not you wait for the package.

6.2 Go to Shinjuku Post Office and Take your Package

When you see your package has arrived at the Shinjuku post office and you are in Japan, please go there. The google Map is here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/LNXrgxSQDXAvPASY9 . It’s open 7 days a week, just note the opening hours.

The place to take the package deposited in the post office is at B1 like this photo shows.

When you see the staff, show them the tracking number + your passport. The tracking number makes them easier to find your package, and they will check if the name is the same on your passport or not. Then, that is it! You successfully got the pills without prescription and seeing a doctor!
